A good humidor is one that holds your cigars at a steady humidity without fuss. That depends less on the photo and more on a few plain facts: the capacity, the materials, what is in the box and what it needs to work. This guide walks through those facts and the kinds of humidor we sell.

Start with your cigars

Think about the cigars before the box. How many do you keep at once, how long are they, and do you buy by the box or a few at a time? Someone with a handful of cigars does well with a 25 count glass top box or an acrylic jar. A collector who buys by the box needs a cabinet. For a gift, ask how many cigars the person usually has on hand. A quick message can save a humidor that is the wrong size.

Read the capacity and the dimensions

Humidors are sold by cigar count, and the count assumes a standard size cigar. If you smoke large ring gauges, allow for fewer. Where the maker gives outside dimensions, the product page shows them, so measure the shelf, desk or drawer first. If there is doubt, a little more room is better than cigars packed tight, because air needs to move around them.

Linings, seals and hygrometers

Lining. Spanish cedar is the traditional lining because it holds moisture well and its scent is part of the appeal. Acrylic and glass do not absorb moisture, so they rely on the humidifier alone. Seal. A close fitting lid or a magnetic door keeps humidity in. Hygrometer. Most humidors include one. A digital hygrometer is easier to read than an analogue dial, and worth checking against a humidity pack of a known level.

Humidity control

A wooden humidor needs seasoning before first use, and the maker's instructions say how. After that, two way humidity packs are the simplest way to hold a steady level, and a crystal gel humidifier topped up with humidor solution is the traditional way. An electric humidor controls temperature and humidity for you and needs a power point.

Desktop humidors

A glass top humidor lets you see your cigars and suits a desk or sideboard. A Spanish cedar desktop box with a solid lid is the classic choice and keeps light off the cigars. Both usually ship with a hygrometer and a humidifier, and the product page gives the maker's cigar count.

Cabinet, display and electric humidors

A cabinet humidor holds a larger collection on shelves and often has LED lighting. A display humidor with a magnetic glass door shows the collection off. An electric humidor keeps temperature and humidity steady on its own, which matters in a hot UK summer.

Acrylic jars and travel humidors

An acrylic humidor jar is airtight, needs no seasoning and suits a small collection. A travel humidor is a crush proof case for a few cigars on a trip. A leather cigar case or a cigar tube carries one to three cigars in a pocket, and cigar bags are the cheapest way to keep cigars fresh for a few weeks.

Hygrometers, humidifiers and packs

A hygrometer tells you the humidity inside the box. A crystal gel humidifier releases moisture slowly and is refilled with humidor solution. Two way humidity packs add or remove moisture to hold a set level, usually 69 percent for cigars. Spanish cedar sheets and a cedar tray add cedar to a jar or divide a larger box.

Cutters, lighters and ashtrays

A guillotine cutter with two blades gives a clean straight cut. A cigar punch makes a small hole in the cap instead. A jet flame torch lighter lights a cigar evenly, even outdoors in a breeze. A cigar ashtray has a wide rest for a thick cigar, and a cigar stand holds it between draws.

Buying a gift on time

We dispatch within 2 working days and delivery then takes up to 12 working days by tracked courier, and regional addresses can take longer. Working days leave out weekends and public holidays. For a birthday, Christmas or Father's Day, order at least two weeks ahead. Delivery is free on orders of £100 or more and a flat £12 under that.

Looking after a humidor

Read the maker's instructions before the first use. Season a wooden humidor with distilled water or humidor solution, never tap water. Keep the box out of direct sun and away from heaters and air conditioning vents. Check the hygrometer once a week and top up the humidifier or swap the packs when the reading drops. This guide is general information, not health advice.

Your humidor buying checklist

Check the capacity against the cigars you keep. Read the lining and the seal. Look at what is in the box, and add humidity packs, solution or a digital hygrometer if they are not there. Note the power supply for an electric humidor. Think about where the humidor will live. Then check the delivery window against the date you need it.

The short version

Buy for your cigars, read the facts on the page, and leave enough time for delivery. Every product page here lists the maker's details (capacity, materials, dimensions and what is in the box) so you can decide before you order, and you have 14 days from delivery to change your mind.
